Laura Prochowski is an Australian born, self-taught abstract artist working on Gadigal land.

Laura began their artistic journey in textiles as an illustrator and designer. In 2021 Laura began painting abstract works in oils, exploring new ways to diversify and renew their practice. The artistic possibilities and freedoms opened up by abstraction inspired Laura, leading them to focus on the development of their own unique voice in this space.

Laura creates medium to large scale abstract landscapes, enveloping audiences in a space that is neither-here-nor-there, charged with emotion and hope for the future.

My landscape paintings depict reflective calm and acceptance of the unknown. My works summon all the complex emotional states a single space can possess; chaos and joy, relief and sadness, grief and guilt, anger and longing.

In my paintings layers of fervent colour are used to capture movement and mood, contributing to the complex dialogue within each work. I push colours to expose the nuances of each, and utilise them to connect the audience with a multitude of emotions. The traditional landscape techniques of line, paths and transitions and frequent illusion of a light source are used to develop atmosphere and perspective, calming the viewer within an otherwise unfamiliar, unrecognisable space.

My paintings intend to haunt their observer, challenging them to accept dualities and participate in an undefined existence, and to relinquish the handrails of certainty. I challenge the viewer to reflect on the climate of their own internal world and the impact of their personal narrative on the world around them. I invite confrontation. The scale of my works creates space for the viewer to participate in a slow conversation with each landscape, enveloping them in a domain that is neither-here-nor-there, charged with nostalgia and future promise.
